Deliberately bad quantum gadgets are a good demo tool because most people still think about quantum risk as a slide deck about Shor and broken RSA, not as a device problem with calibration, leakage, and all the ways a lab system can fail before it does anything useful. DEF CON is a decent place for that, since the gap between toy quantum hardware and a real adversarial setting is where a lot of the security assumptions get shaky.
